Dr. Wayne Whaley, Professor of Zoology at Utah Valley University and a member of the Utah Lepidopterists Society, will speak about his research which concerns the Indra Swallowtail Butterfly, a beautiful and highly variable species which occurs in Utah and other parts of the western US. Butterflies tend to be very picky about where they lay eggs because plants produce many chemical deterrents. As a consequence serious lepidopterists necessarily become very familiar with our native plants. The Utah Native Plant Society is dedicated to the appreciation, preservation, conservation and responsible use of the native plant and plant communities found in the state of Utah and the Intermountain West. Their goal is to foster public recognition of the spectacularly diverse flora of the state – natural treasure to be valued, respected and protected.
